Weekly Overview February 18-22


We are ramping up our ISAT Prep work.  Students will be getting additional work assignments to focus on test-taking skills for this important assessment.  ISAT testing will be March 4-7.

Here is the Weekly Overview:

Reader’s Workshop

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Reading Skill focus:  Making Connections/Inference-  Students will make connections as they are reading independently this week.  They should focus on making at least one text-text, one text-self, and one text-world connection.

ISAT Prep:  Author’s Purpose/Theme

Students will work independently in Reader’s Workshop to complete the Daily 5 tasks.   Students will meet in Guided Reading group this week  to discuss the reading and share reading assignment tasks with the group.  GR assignments are assignments that should be completed in class.  GR Books should not be transported home.

Writer’s Workshop-

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.5.5 With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.5.5a Interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context.

This week, students will complete work in a Poetry Unit:  Poetic Devices.  This week, students will identify, assess and develop poems using poetic devices:  Personification and Idiom.  Students will create original poems for self-made Poetic Devices manuals.  Please refer to the Homework chart for homework assignments.


We will continue work in Unit 9:  Coordinates, Area, Volume, and Capacity.  This unit was chosen based on grade-level assessment of students’ needs to prepare for ISAT assessment.    This week , we will reinforce student understanding of area and perimeter and introduce volume.  In tandem, ISAT Prep work will revolve around concepts of volume.

Science- “Levers and Pulleys”

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.7 Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

The third section is titled:  Pulleys

Investigation F:  One-Pulley Systems

Investigation G:  Two-Pulley Systems

Notebooks are  due on Friday, February 22.
