Weekly Overview November 7-11

Hello Parents and Students,

This week will be quick and busy!  There is no school on Thursday and Friday for Ray students.  I will be sending home a Field Trip Permission Form for you to fill out and return.  Please send this back ASAP so that it is on file.  This form will be on record as permission for your student to attend all field trips this year.

REMINDER:  Our field trip to the Field Museum is scheduled for November 15.  We will be leaving Ray School at 9:30, and returning by 1:30.  I am still looking for 2 chaperones to assist me on this field trip.  Students will be going on a scavenger hunt through the Native American exhibits, and I will ask parents to oversee ten students on this assignment.  Please email me if you are available.

ReadingThis week in our  GR Groups, students are working on Reading Strategies:  Making Inference/Prediction while reading their assigned books.  When not in Reading Groups, students continue their Daily Five independent work daily during Reader’s Workshop.   Homework:  Students should read at home at least 30 minutes nightly and making  Thinkmarks  to help them think deeper about their reading.

Writing:   Students will continue collecting observations for their next writing assignment:  Expository Essays.  These essays are different because they don’t tell stories, but instead investigate ideas that students have.   This week, students will elaborate on their observations by asking themselves:  This observation makes me think about…?

Homework:  Students will  develop ideas about their observations, and conduct observations on the conversations around them at home.  Don’t be surprised if your child asks you a thought-provoking question to gather an observation.
