Weekly Overview/Homework 2/25-3/1



Just a reminder, that as we are in Q3, we are working on a few new incentives/skills.

  • Math Problem Of The Week incentive for ROOM 314:  This is a completely OPTIONAL opportunity.  Students are given a Math Problem of the Week on Monday to be turned in the following Monday.  Correct responses get 10 points.  Partially correct responses get 5 points.  As students rack up points, they will work towards receiving an ice cream treat at the end the the 10 week Quarter.
  • Spelling Tests are weekly and all 5th grade writers are responsible for studying and practicing spelling words.  Spelling practice sheets are handed out at the start of the week, and they are due on Fridays, before the test.

Here is an overview of what we will be doing this week in our CORE SUBJECTS:

Reader’s Workshop–This week, students will work in all five stations of The Daily Five:  Read To Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Guided Reading, Reader’s Response.  Please allow students to bring headphones or earbuds to school so they may listen on Epic Books.  Students will be required to write weekly Reader’s Response letters about their IR books as assessments.  In addition, students will take a reading quiz after they complete their IR book.

Annotation objective: This week, we will continue to focus on annotating explicit information from the text in our IR books.

Math-  This week we concludeUnit 5 FRACTIONS.  This week students will multiply and divide fractions in a variety of ways.  Lessons 5-14 will be convered on Monday, with a full unit review on Tuesday.  Students will take the Unit 5 test on Wednesday.

Writer’s Workshop-This week in writing, students will complete drafting and revise their essays with transition words and phrases to TIE their paragraphs together.  Then, students will create a Works Cited list and edit/revise their writing in partners.

Q3 Focus:  Spelling     This week’s spelling focuses on contractions and using apostrophes correctly.  Students will receive a list of words to practice and study on Monday.  On Friday, students will take their first spelling test for Q3.
