Weekly Overview/Homework/Tic Tac Toe 1/30-2/3

Dear Parents,

Friday is a non-attendance day for students.  It is the end of Q2.  Tic Tac Toe assignments will be due on Thursday.

Reader’s Workshop:  Reading GOAL- Students have until Thursday to meet their Reading Goal for Q2.  This goal will be graded on the percentage of points that they accrue towards their total point goal.  Students earn points by taking reading quizzes after they finish any IR or GR book.  Please make sure that your child is reading a minimum of 30 minutes nightly from their IR book so that they may meet their goal. This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also complete work in the Class novel, Wonder.

Writer’s Workshop/Science: This week, students will complete/present their Google slideshows that they created together on their planets.   This project will conclude our persuasive writing for Q2.  Then, students will begin work on a new type of essay, Expository.

Math:  In Math, students will continue Unit 5, Fractions.  This week’s lessons will emphasize finding fractions of whole numbers and fractions.   Students will take a Checking Progress quiz Thursday.

Science:  This week,  student will look at plant cells inside of an onion.  Students will make wet-mount slides, observe specimens under the microscope, and sketch the specimen with accuracy.

Social Studies:  Students will study the second group of 13 colonies:  Middle.  Students will determine what sets them apart from other colonies by organizing information in a chart.

5TH Grade Tic Tac Toe Assignment: Choose 3 different activities!  Due Friday.

Make a prediction about what you think will happen next in your IR book.  Provide evidence from the story that helped you make your prediction. (3-5 sentences) Sketch To Stretch- sketch an important part in the story you are reading.  Then, explain what is happening in the sketch and why it is important to the story. Create a Facebook page for your main character in the story.  Include information that is central to the character.  Illustrate and color the page.
What genre do you think your book is?  Explain why you think this in 3-5 developed sentences. Make a connection to the story.  Explain your connection in 3-5 sentences. What character do you have the most in common with?  Explain why in 3-5 sentences.
Write a letter to your teacher about your favorite character in the story and explain why you like this character using text details. 3-5 sentences. Identify these story elements in your IR book:  characters, setting, problem, solution (or your prediction of what the solution will be) Find three words that you do not know from your IR book.  Define each word and draw a picture to help you remember its meaning
