Monday, April 25, 2016

Dear Parents,

I hope you had a wonderful break with your child!  We are back to business this week, as we close out the 5th grade year strong and ready for 6th grade.

This week, students will complete the Math portion of PARCC.  Tests will occur in the afternoon, Mon-Thu, with a make-up day on Friday.

Here is an overview of what we will be doing this week in our CORE SUBJECTS:

Reader’s Workshop

This week, students will complete their tasks in the Daily Five.   Students will use their IR books to guide them through Daily Five weekly.

**Please make sure your child is reading nightly for 30 minutes minimum from one book and bringing that book to and from school as if it were a textbook.  This is an important component of Daily Five and a homework component, along with the Reading Log, comprise 30% of your child’s overall reading grade.

I will work with Guided Reading groups this week.  We will begin new Q4 books, focusing on inferencing in the text.  Students will use text evidence quoted directly to support their reasoning.

Writing-

This week, students will finish revisions to their persuasive essays and publish their work over the weekend.  Essays are due on Monday, May 2.

Math-

In Math, students will continue Unit 7.  Students will divide fractions and classify triangles and quadrilaterals.  Lessons 7.4-7.7 will be covered.

Social Studies-  Canceled due to PARCC testing

Science-    Students will begin a new unit this week:  Microworlds.  Inestigation A will ask students to heighten their observational skills to sketch a penny from memory.  Students will also describe characteristics of unknown items in a scientific manner in Investigation B.
