Weekly Overview/Homework 11/25-11/29

  • Welcome to Week 13.  This week is Thanksgiving!  I hope your family enjoys the time t gether 🙂
  • Ray School is organizing a food drive!  Students on the third floor are asked to bring in a non-perishable item that is RED.  However, all items will be accepted 🙂
  • The class fee is $85.  Please remit payment as soon as you can.  This allows us to order class texts, supplies, and pay for online programs.  You can even pay online!   Here is the link: http://rayschool.weebly.com/student-fees.html
  • Don’t forget the join the PTO! Ray’s PTO is  a vital part of our school culture, and your membership will immediately affect your child’s classroom.  The PTO provides funding to classrooms, special programs, as well as field trip supports.  We love out PTO <3

Here is what’s going on in our classroom this week:

Reader’s Workshop–Due to the short week week, students  will complete their 5th grade Daily 3 activities:  Listen To Reading, Word Work, and Reader’s Response.  This week we will read from our class novel, WONDER, and students will compose a Fab 5 summary of what we have read.

Students should be reading AT LEAST 30 active minutes nightly in their selected Independent Reading book.  Students will be required to take a reading quiz after they finish each independent novel.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will write a first draft of their story.

Math-In Math, students will continue with Unit focus on fractions.  Lessons 3-1 and 3-2 will be covered.

Here is what’s going on in our classroom this week:

Reader’s Workshop–This week, students  will continue their 5th grade Daily 5 activities:  Read To Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Guided Reading, and Reader’s Response.  This week we will read a selection from Scholastic SCOPE about the Paradise, CA fires.  Students will practice summarizing the article, as well as identifying features in a non-fiction text.

Students should be reading AT LEAST 30 active minutes nightly in their selected Independent Reading book.  Students will be required to take a reading quiz after they finish each independent novel.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will begin some drafting activities for their next essay:  Personal Narrative.  This week, students will use an organizer to arrange their writing into paragraphs.  Then, students will write a first draft of their story.

Math-In Math, students will take the Unit 2 test.  Then, students will begin Unit 3, which will focus on fractions.  Lessons 3-1 and 3-2 will be covered.

Weekly Overview 11/4-11/8

  • Welcome to Week 10.  Friday is a day off school and the end of Quarter 1!  Students will still be responsible for reading on this day off, but reading logs will be handed in on Thursday this week instead of the usual Friday.
  • I will be taking a two-day medical leave on November 13-14, and therefore will be unable to attend parent-teacher conferences.  If you would like to meet at a different time to discuss your child’s progress, I am available most days from 10-11 am.

Reader’s Workshop–This week, students  will continue their 5th grade Daily 5 activities:  Read To Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Guided Reading, and Reader’s Response.  This week we will continue reading our class novel, Wonder.  Students should be reading AT LEAST 30 active minutes nightly in their selected Independent Reading book.  Students will be required to take a reading quiz after they finish each independent novel.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will begin some pre-writing activities for their next essay:  Personal Narrative.  This week, students will pick two from their prewriting lists to to write long about in their notebooks.  This assignment will be graded.  Then, students will use a graphic organizer to begin planning their stories.

Math-In Math, students will use concepts of estimation and place value to multiply and divide double-digit and triple-digit numbers.  Lessons 2-9-2-11 will be covered.  There will be a Progress Check  on Thursday.
