Weekly Overview 9/30-10/4

Here are some announcements for Week 5:

  • Welcome to Week 5.  This week is Progress Report week.  Progress Reports will go home with students Friday.  Please review and return the bottom portion for confirmation of receipt.  Attached to Progress Reports you will find Beginning Of Year MAP NWEA test results.  For help on reading the report, please see the following link:  https://teach.mapnwea.org/impl/maphelp/Content/Data/SampleReports/StudentProgressReport.htm
  • The class fee is $85.  Please remit payment as soon as you can.  This allows us to order class texts, supplies, and pay for online programs.  You can even pay online!   Here is the link: http://rayschool.weebly.com/student-fees.html
  • Please go through and fill out all necessary forms in the ‘Welcome Back’ packet that were sent home on the first day of school.
  • Don’t forget the join the PTO! Ray’s PTO is  a vital part of our school culture, and your membership will immediately affect your child’s classroom.  The PTO provides funding to classrooms, special programs, as well as field trip supports.  We love out PTO <3

Here is what’s going on in our classroom this week:

Reader’s Workshop–This week, students will continue their 5th grade Daily 5 activities:  Read To Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Guided Reading, and Reader’s Response.  In addition, we will begin  our class novel, Wonder.  Students should be reading AT LEAST 30 active minutes nightly in their selected Independent Reading book.  Students will be required to take a reading quiz after they finish each independent novel.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will continue to work to turn one writing piece into a published story.  We will draft, revise, and edit our writing pieces before we publish a final draft.  This week will focus on revising drafts for better word choice and sensory details that add suspense in scary stories.

Math-In Math, students will review concepts of area and volume.  Students will take the Unit 1 test on Tuesday.  On Wednesday and Thursday, students will begin Unit 2.  Lesson 2-1 and 2-2 will be covered this week.  There will be a Progress Check over the two lessons on Friday.

  • Welcome to Week 4.  This week is our first PTO meeting of the schhool year on Tuesday September 24 at 5:00 pm.  Please come to hear more about Ray’s budget, our first fundraiser, and learn about new things going on at Ray this year.

Weekly Overview 9/16-9/20

Here are some announcements for Week 2:

  • Welcome to Week 3.  This week we will be adding small guided reading groups to our weekly reading work.  Initial groupings are based on NWEA scores.
  • We have almost 100% on ClassDojo.  Thank you!.  ClassDojo is how I will send weekly updates and announcements throughout the week.  I will send a signup sheet this week for those of you not yet signed up.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will turn one writing piece into a published story.  This week we will select a story idea from our daily writing prompts and organize story elements into an organizer in preparation for drafting.

Math-In Math, students will be introduced to concepts of volume.  Students will explore a variety of ways to determine the volume of a three dimensional rectangular prism.  Lessons 1-5 through 1-8 will be covered.

Here is what’s going on in our classroom this week:

Reader’s Workshop–This week, students will be working on independent reading and writing in Reader’s Workshop.  Students will compose a practice Reader’s Letter this week.  Please see the Rubrics tab for a Reader’s Response rubric so you may see how I will assess future letters.  Students will be introduced to the 5th grade Daily 5 activities:  Read To Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Guided Reading, and Reader’s Response.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will compose writing pieces in their notebooks based on horror fantasy fiction writing prompts.  We will review elements of horror fantasy, and students will turn one writing piece into a published story.  Students also need to decorate the front and back cover of their notebooks.  This is due Friday and will count as a homework grade for the week.

Math-In Math, students will find areas of rectangles with fractional side-lengths.  Students will work on solving real-world area problems by exploring the area of a quilt.
