Weekly Overview/Homework 10/29-11/2

  • This week marks the end of Q1.  Missing/late work/revised work will be accepted no later than Wednesday, November 1.

  • Thank you to the parents who joined us on our Zoo field trip Monday.  It was perfect Fall weather.
  • There is no school on Friday, November 2.

Here is an overview of what we will be doing this week in our CORE SUBJECTS:

Reader’s Workshop–This week, students will work in all five stations of The Daily Five:  Read To Self, Listen To Reading, Word Work, Guided Reading, Reader’s Response.  Please allow students to bring headphones or earbuds to school so they may listen on Epic Books.  Students will be required to write weekly Reader’s Response letters about their IR books as assessments.  In addition, students will take a reading quiz after they complete each IR book.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will work on developing poetry by observing and writing about an image.  Poems will center around the image, looking at it from different perspectives.  Additionally, students will be collecting wriitng ideas for their next work of fiction:  Fantasy fiction.

Math-In Math, students will finish work in Unit 2.  Students will practice long division using two algorithms:  partial quotients and US Traditional division.  Lessons 2-12 and 2-13 will be covered.

  • Several parents have still not signed up for ClassDojo, and you are missing important announcements throughout the week.  Please sign up ASAP, either on your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

  • Please attend the PTO-sponsored Halloween dance this Friday from 5-7 pm.  Admission is $5, and proceeds will benefit the 8th grade field trip to Washington D.C.  Please note, costun=mes may not be work to school.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will focus on peer-editing and publishing their drafts this week.  Mini-lessons will center around peer editing and composing an “About The Author” paragraph to accompany their essay.

Math-In Math, students will continue work in Unit 2.  Students will continue practice in traditional multiplication, convert measurements, and use friendly multiples to solve division problems.  Lessons 2-9, 2-10, and 2-11 will be covered.

Math-In Math, students will continue work in Unit 2.  Students will practice traditional multiplication and convert measurements .  Lessons 2-5, 2-6, 2-7, and 2-8 will be covered.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will finish Personal Narrative Graphic organizers and draft their essays.  We will learn how to “zoom in” to the heart of the story to add more detail and improve the moment.  Students will add these revisions to their writing.

Math-In Math, students will continue work in Unit 2.  Students will explore exponential notation, and develop mental math estimation strategies.  Lessons 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4 will be covered.

Writer’s Workshop-This week,  students will finish prewriting activities for their first writing essay:  personal narrative.  Students will complete a planning sheet to map out their writing.

Math-In Math, students will review Unit 1 concepts on Monday.  Then, students will take a Unit 1 test on Tuesday.  Wednesday and Thursday will begin Unit2.  We will discuss values of exponents and solve problems using exponents.
