SY-18-19 Calendar Letter to Families

Parents,
This week concludes Quarter 2.
****All 5th grade writers should submit their published persuasive essays by Wednesday.  Any later and points will be deducted for late deadline.  The rubric for grading is below:
THIS THURSDAY:  Join us for a night out at The Promontory on Thursday February 1,2018 from 6-8 pm featuring a performance by Bethany Pickens Trio! Your $40 advance ticket includes beer, wine and light appetizers.  Child care will be provided by Hyde Park Neighborhood Club(HPNC) from 5:45-8:30 pm for $20/child + $10/sibling, including dinner and fun! Weekly Overview:
  • Reader’s Workshop–This week, students will work on Daily Five activities.  Students will write their Reader’s Response for a reading assessment grade.  Reader’s Response letters are graded using a Rubric.  Students will meet with me in small guided reading groups to work on reading strategies.  This week’s groups will meet to practice reading strategies that will help them to make INFERENCES to the text.  Students will highlight and discuss important parts of the text.  In addition, students will complete classwork activities with Word Work and with Listen To Reading on Epic Books.
  • Writer’s Workshop-  This week,  students will publish persuasive essays.  The deadline for essays has been extended:   essays are due by Wednesday, January 31.
  • Math-In Math, students will continue Unit 4, decimals and coordinates.  Students will be shading grids to solve decimal addition and subtraction problems, and reviewing whole number addition algorithms to use them to add decimals. Lessons 4-11 to 4-13 will be covered.

  • We will attend a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium on Friday.  Please submit permission slips by Thursday at the latest.  Students will need a sack lunch for this trip.

  • Writer’s Workshop-  This week,  students will draft and revise essays by using persuasive language.  Students will publish essays over the weekend.  Essays are due on Monday, January 29.
  • Math-In Math, students will begin Unit4, decimals and coordinates.  Students will work on graphing and analyzing coordinates on a grid.  Students will continue decimal practice in preparation for addition and subtraction work next week.  Lessons 4-8-4-10 will be covered.

Writer’s Workshop-  This week,  students will begin prewriting persuasive essays.  Students will create a Graphic organizer to assemble their writing prior to drafting.  They will work on introduction and body paragraphs this week.

Math-In Math, students will begin Unit4, decimals and coordinates.  Students will work on writing decimals in words, using a place value chart to identify decimals, and compare decimal values.  Lessons 4-1 to 4-4 will be covered.
