IMPORTANT: MAP testing is this Tuesday and Wednesday
Ray School Olympics is coming up on May 30. On that day, students will participate in a number of athletic competitions. Make sure your child wears a plain white t-shirt with their Olympic number proudly displayed on it. Students who had shirts made can write or tape their number on it.
Here’s what’s going on in our classroom this week:
Reader’s Workshop: Guided Reading groups are still reading fractured fairytales to inspire them in writing their own. Tic-Tac-Toes are due this week. . This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also read from the class novel, The Witch Of Blackbird Pond.
Writer’s Workshop: This week, students will complete story mapping their FFT plot. Students will spend the week drafting and revising their drafts to include descriptive details in the story.
Math: In Math, students will continue Unit 8. Students will work on Lessons 8-9- to 8-10 this week.
Science: This week, students will continue work on a unit of study, Solar Energy. Students will begin Investigation C- Solar Houses.
Social Studies: Students will complete work in Chapter 7. A test over Lesson 3 and 4 will be on Wednesday. Then, students will learn about the first Constitutional Convention.
5TH Grade Tic Tac Toe Assignment: Choose 3 different activities! Due Friday.

Last week I sent a Dojo message to you about signing up for the school Walk-A-Thon. Please sign your child up ASAP. If our classroom has 100% participation they will get a special incentive prize from me.

Reader’s Workshop: Guided Reading groups are still reading fractured fairytales in preparation for writing their own. Tic-Tac-Toes are due this week. . This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also read from the class novel, The Witch Of Blackbird Pond.
Writer’s Workshop: This week, students will complete prewriting for their fractured fairy tales. Work includes a fairy tale graphic organizer, writing long in their notebooks, and story mapping the plot. Time will be given in class, but late finishers will be required to spend time at home to finish up.
Math: In Math, students will continue Unit 8. Students will work on Lessons 8-6 to 8-8 this week.
Science: This week, students will continue work on a new unit of study, Solar Energy. Students will finish investigation B: Testing Earth Materials.
Social Studies: Students will complete work in Chapter 7. Students will read about the effects of the war, suck as the abolitionist movement, founding of the Northwest Territory, and conflicts with Native Americans, A quiz over Chapter 7, Lesson 3 and 4 will be early next week.
5TH Grade Tic Tac Toe Assignment: Choose 3 different activities! Due Friday.

Dear Parents,
Next week, Thursday May 18 is our field trip with the Licoln Park Zoo ChES program to the zoo! Make sure your child has a sack lunch, long pants and shirt, and closed-toed shoes.

Writer’s Workshop: This week, students will complete their publishing and submit all work for an assessment grade in writing. It will be graded via a rubric, which we have discussed throughout.
Math: In Math, students will continueUnit 8. Students will work on Lessons 8-4-8-5 this week.
Science: This week, students will continue work on a new unit of study, Solar Energy. Students will develop hypotheses and test them, using thermometers to test earth materials’ temperatures in the sun and shade this week.
Social Studies: Students will continue work in Chapter 7. Students will read about the heroes of the war, the Battle Of Yorktown, and the Treaty of Paris this week.
5TH Grade Tic Tac Toe Assignment: Choose 3 different activities! Due Friday.
Rewrite the last chapter you read in your IR book from another character’s P.O.V. | Sketch To Stretch- Sketch an important part in the story you are reading. Then, explain what is happening in the sketch and why it is important to the story. | Draw a cartoon strip that illustrates an important part of the book you are reading. Include at least 4 frames, provide captions and speech bubbles and color it. |
Make a prediction about what you think will happen next in your IR book. Provide evidence from the story that helped you make your prediction. (3-5 sentences) | Create a Crossword Puzzle that includes the names of important characters, places and events in the book you are reading. Then solve it! | Lift a Line- Select a sentence or two from the story you are reading. Then, write down your own thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the sentences. |
Write a letter to about the book you are reading. Include reasons why they would enjoy the book, citing specific details from the story. | What “gift” would you buy for your main character in the book you are reading? How would it help them in the stry? Explain and be specific!!! (3-5 sentences) | Find three words that you do not know from your IR book and define them. Write three synonyms and three antonyms for each word. |

Here are highlights for the week:
Reader’s Workshop: Students will receive 4th Quarter Reading goals this week. Make sure your child is reading 30-45 minutes nightly, otherwise it will be difficult for them to achieve their Reading goal. Reading goals will be graded on the points that they earn towrds their goal for the Quarter. Students earn points by taking reading quizzes after they finish any IR or GR book. This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will alsobegin a new class novel, The Witch Of Blackbird Pond.
In Lieu of Tic Tac Toes this week, students will create Word Collages based their current IR book. Here is an example:
Writer’s Workshop: This week, students will publish their simile poems and create and publish their metaphor poems.
Math: In Math, students will begin Unit 8. Students will work on Lessons 8-1 to 8-3 this week.
Science: This week, students will begin a new unit of study, Solar Energy. Students will develop hypotheses and test them, using thermometers to earth materials’ temperatures in the sun and shade this week.
Social Studies: Students will continue work in Chapter 7. Students will read about major battles of the war, and how the winter at Valley Forge impacted the Continental Army.
