Dear Parents,

  • We are performing in the school Black History Celebration on Tuesday, February 28.  Parents are invited to attend the 2 pm performance.  We hope you can make it!
  • Students need to have their own DRY-ERASE MARKER for Math Centers.  Please purchase one for your child ASAP.

Reader’s Workshop: Make sure your child is reading 30-45 minutes nightly, otherwise it will be difficult for them to achieve this goal. ReadnQuiz goals will be graded on the percentage of points that they accrue towards their total point goal. Students earn points by taking reading quizzes after they finish any IR or GR book. This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also complete work in the class novel, Maniac Magee

Writer’s Workshop: This week, students will begin work on their next essay format: Expository.  Students will research an ecosystem to develop an informative essay about it.

Math: In Math, students will continue work in Chapter 6.  Students will work on converting measurements, creating line plots to display data, and work with concepts of volume.  Lessons 6.3-6.6 will be covered.

Science: This week, students will continue work in their new unit of study:  Ecosystems, with Ms. Pfeiffer.

Social Studies: Students will continue work in Chapter 8.  They will discover the taxes that Britain had placed on the colonists and how they led to events like the Boston Massacre.

5TH Grade Tic Tac Toe Assignment: Choose 3 different activities!  Due Friday.

Rewrite the last chapter you read in your IR book from another character’s P.O.V. (like the author does in WONDER) Sketch To Stretch- Sketch an important part in the story you are reading.  Then, explain what is happening in the sketch and why it is important to the story. Draw a cartoon strip that illustrates an important part of the book you are reading.  Include at least 4 frames, provide captions and speech bubbles and color it.
Make a prediction about what you think will happen next in your IR book.  Provide evidence from the story that helped you make your prediction. (3-5 sentences) Create a Crossword Puzzle that includes the names of important characters, places and events in the book you are reading.  Then solve it! Lift a Line- Select a sentence or two from the story you are reading.  Then, write down your own thoughts, feelings, and reactions to the sentences.
Write a letter to  about the book you are reading.  Include reasons why they would enjoy the book, citing specific details from the story. What “gift” would you buy for your main character in the book you are reading?  How would it help them in the stry?  Explain and be specific!!! (3-5 sentences) Find three words that you do not know from your IR book and define them.  Write three synonyms and three antonyms for each word.

Math: In Math, students will complete Unit 5, Fractions. Students will review and test on Wednesday.  Then, students will begin Chapter 6.

Science: This week, students will begin a new unit of study:  Ecosystems, with Ms. Pfeiffer.

Social Studies: Students will begin work in Chapter 8.  They will determine causes of the Revolutionary War this week.

Writer’s Workshop: This week, students will continue work on their next essay format: Expository.  Students will draft and revise their how-to essays.

Math: In Math, students will continue Unit 5, Fractions. This week’s lessons will have students. Reset number stories for fraction multiplication sentences, as well as divide fractions. Students will take a Checking Progress quiz Friday.

Science: This week, student will look at the Blepharisma and Vinegar Eels, two protist organisms.  Students will observe specimens under the microscope, and sketch the specimen with accuracy. Students will make observations and write a conclusion to the experiment.

Social Studies: Students will complete their learning and notes on the 13 colonies.  Students will take a quiz over the Thirteen Colonies on Wednesday.

Reader’s Workshop:  Reading GOAL- Students will receive their new Q3 ReadnQuiz goal this week.  Make sure your child is reading 30-45 minutes nightly, otherwise it will be difficult for them to achieve this goal.  ReadnQuiz goals will be graded on the percentage of points that they accrue towards their total point goal.  Students earn points by taking reading quizzes after they finish any IR or GR book.  This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also complete the Class novel, Wonder.

Writer’s Workshop/Science: This week, students will begin work on their next essay format:  Expository.  Students will use their Boss sheets to select a writing topic and begin organizing their writing ideas in a graphic organizers.  Students will begin drafting their essays by Friday.

Math:  In Math, students will continue Unit 5, Fractions.  This week’s lessons will emphasize finding the area of fractional parts.   Students will take a Checking Progress quiz Friday.

Science:  This week,  student will look at the Volvox, a protist organism.  Students will observe specimens under the microscope, and sketch the specimen with accuracy.  Students will make observations and write a conclusion to the experiment.

Social Studies:  Students will study the final group of 13 colonies:  Southern.  Students will determine what sets them apart from other colonies by organizing information in a chart.  In addition, we will explore ideas of social protest, citing sit-ins, marches, and boycotts to create change in the Civil Rights movement.
