Dear Parents,

Reader’s Workshop–

Reading GOAL:  Students have been giving a reading goal for Q2.  This goal will be graded on the percentage of points that they accrue towards their total point goal.  Students earn points by taking reading quizzes after they finish any IR or GR book.  Please make sure that your child is reading a minimum of 30 minutes nightly from their IR book so that they may meet their goal.

This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also complete work in the Class novel, Wonder.  Tic Tac Toe boards are now digital, and they will be available every week on the class blog.

 

 

Writer’s Workshop-

This week students will work on creating persuasive commercials to sell their cereal to the class.  We will have an anonymous vote on the most persuasive commercial after all students present.

Math:

In Math, students will continue practice adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, solve fraction number stories, and evaluate fraction-of problems.  Lessons 3.11-3.14 will be covered.

Science-

This week, students will begin a new unit, Microworlds.  Students will make observations on a penny based from memory, from a one minute viewing, and from a close examination with a magnifier.  Then, students will identify attributes of objects and sketch closely details of the objects.

5TH Grade Tic Tac Toe Assignment:

Choose any 3 activities.  Due Friday.

Create a comic strip of the important plot events that you have read this week from your IR book.  YOur comic strip should have five frames, a caption in each frame, and speech bubbles. Draw a picture of the main character and surround your drawing with 5 words that describe the character.  Then, pick one of those words and explain in 3-5 sentences why that word descries the character.   Make a persuasive  advertisement for the book.  Include the title, author, and an exciting picture on your poster!  Your poster should be neat and colorful.  Use persuasive techniques 🙂
Make a word search with important words, names, and places from the story. Solve it! Make a connection to the story.  Explain your connection in 3-5 sentences. From the story,Wonder, we have learned a little bit about Via’s friend, Miranda.  Use one word to describe her and defend your word choice by using text details to support it.
Write a letter to the protagonist (main character) in your Guided Reading book, and give them some advice on how to solve their problem in the story. Make a Venn diagram to compare this book to your guided reading book.  How was it similar? How was it different?   What do you think the theme of your IR book is?  Remember, theme is the lesson the story is teaching you.

Dear Parents,

  • Our classroom earned 15 golden tickets!  We will have a movie and popcorn incentive party on 11/22 in the afternoon.  Donations of drinks would be greatly appreciated 🙂
  • I hope you and your family have a most excellent Thanksgiving Break.  I think we can all use a break after the combinations of the Super Moon and the election!

Scholastic SCOPE:  Students will read an article about Claudette Colvin.  They will discuss the article and write a persuasive essay to argue for a street to be named after her.

This week students will begin a persuasive unit in Writing.  Students will discuss the types of persuasion used in advertising.  Then, students will bring in examples of persuasive advertisements and discuss what successfully persuaded them.  Finally, students will begin creating a persuasive advertisement for a new cereal on the market that they create.

Math:

In Math, students will continue work in Unit 3, Fractions.  Lessons 3.6-3.9 will have students determine reasonable answers for fraction problems, use benchmarks to make estimates, rename fractions and mixed numbers, and interpret addition and subtraction fraction stories.  Students will take a short Checking Progress quiz on Friday.

Science-

This week, students will complete experiments to test a set of variables in a sinking water clock.  Students will take notes and observe how the independent variable affected the dependent variable in the experiment.  Students will write a formal investigation in their notebook to be assessed for grading.

  • Parents- please remember our school-wide birthday celebration policy:  All monthly birthdays will be celebrated on the last Friday of the month.  Please contact me if you would like to celebrate with treats.
  • Here is an overview of what we will be doing this week in our CORE SUBJECTS:

Reader’s Workshop–

This week, students will work on Daily 5 activities: Read To Self, Guided Reading, Listen To Reading, and Word Work. Students will also complete work in the Class novel, Wonder.  Reading Logs must be completed and signed by parent/guardian to enforce and track independent Reading minutes.  Too many students are not self-regulating their nightly reading habits.  This should be completed  along with the tic tac toe board and submitted on Fridays.

Scholastic SCOPE:  -none- due to short week

 

Writer’s Workshop-

This week students will complete revisions of their drafts and compose a second draft with revisions,  Then, students will publish essays.  All essays are due Monday, 11/14.

Math:

In Math, students will continue work in Unit 3, Fractions.  Lessons 3.4-3.5 will be covered.  Students will take a short Checking Progress quiz on Thursday.

Science-

This week, students will complete experiments to test a set of variables in a sinking water clock.  Students will take notes and observe how the independent variable affected the dependent variable in the experiment.  Students will write a formal investigation in their notebook to be assessed for grading.

This week students will continue work on fictional narratives.  Students will create stories based on the painting, Sundays on the Island Of La Grande Jatte.  Students will work on important revisions to improve the quality of their first drafts.

Math:

In Math, students will begin work in Unit 3, Fractions.  Lessons 3.1-3.3 will be covered.  Students will take a short Checking Progress quiz on Thursday,
