Dear Parents,

This is our last heavy work week in Room 304.  Students will be taking final tests in Social Studies and Math and 5th grade memoirs are due on Wednesday.  Please remind your child to stay in work mode so that they may finish 5th grade strong.

We will have our 5th Grade Poetry Slam on Friday at 1:30 pm.  You are invited to attend.  We will have a Poetry Café with snacks in the classroom after the Slam.  I will provide drinks and cookies.  Please contribute a snack if you can.  Please stay tuned for location and any updates throughout the week. You may contact me at agkrecik@cps.edu if you have any additional questions.

Reading: We will continue to read The Witch Of Blackbird Pond. Students will refine their reading comprehension skills that we have been focusing on all year.  These include:  prediction, summarizing, visualizing, inferencing, and drawing conclusions.  In addition, students will read short fiction books to refine their skills in guided reading groups.  Students will respond to independent reading in their journals.

Writing: We will practice Poetry Performance techniques, and students will prepare poems to perform for this week’s Poetry Slam.   As a final writing piece, students will complete their memoirs of a moment from 5th grade.  Memoirs are due on Wednesday June 9th.

Math: This week students will complete lessons from Unit 8.  Specifically, students will find fractional units of a whole and divide fractions.  We will cover lessons 8.10 and 8.11.  Students will take a Unit 8 Assessment on Thursday June 10th.

Science: Students have completed Health and Human Development classes with Ms. Garcia.  This week we will continue to investigate Levers and Pulleys.  Students will construct and identify class-1, 2, and 3 levers and perform multiple trials for different experiments.

Social Studies: This Wednesday June 9th, students will take a test on Chapter 12:  The Constitution. This test will be open-book/open-note.  In addition, we will spend time examining The Bill Of Rights.  Student pairs will complete a set of flashcards depicting the first 10 amendments.

Spelling: We will complete our last spelling practice this week.  Please study with your child the spelling words.  The spelling test will be Friday.
